From The Root Up to Southern Roots

Before there was Southern Roots, there was From The Root Up.

Years ago, we started making a handcrafted salve centered around something most people rarely think about—the root of the cannabis plant.

So much attention is given to the flower, but we became fascinated with the plant from a completely different perspective. We wanted to go back to the beginning—to the root.

That curiosity eventually became From The Root Up.

What started as something we made ourselves grew through word of mouth. People tried it, shared it with their families and friends, came back for more, and before long our little homemade salve had become something much bigger than we originally imagined.

Through it all, our philosophy stayed simple: use thoughtfully chosen ingredients, make it in small batches, and don't overcomplicate what nature already gave us.

Our original formula combined cannabis root, coconut oil, beeswax, lavender, magnesium, and eucalyptus. It was a formula we loved and believed in, and it became the foundation of everything that followed.

Then life changed—and so did our roots.

A New Home. A New Chapter.

When we moved South, it felt like the right time to let our salve grow with us.

We didn't want to completely reinvent something that had already become such an important part of our story. Instead, we wanted to honor where we started while creating something that represented where we were going.

We kept the heart of our original formula—cannabis root, coconut oil, beeswax, lavender, and magnesium—but decided it was time for one meaningful change.

We removed the eucalyptus and introduced magnolia flower.

Magnolia felt like it belonged.

It's unmistakably Southern, but our decision went deeper than that. Magnolia has a long history of traditional botanical use, making it a natural fit for a formula already built around our appreciation for plants and roots.

It became our way of bringing a little piece of our new Southern home into every jar.

And with that change, Southern Roots Salve was born.

Southern Roots isn't a replacement for From The Root Up.

It's the next chapter of it.

From The Root Up represents where this journey began. Southern Roots represents where that journey has brought us.

And today, Southern Roots has become part of an even bigger story—MedicatedMema.

It's a story about a mother and daughter, our love of plants and natural living, Mema's one-of-a-kind art, plenty of laughter, a little bit of craziness, and an incredible community that has grown right alongside us.

A lot has changed since we made those first batches.

But the reason we do it hasn't.

We still believe in keeping things simple. We still believe in making things with intention. And we still believe there's something pretty special about remembering where you came from, even while you're growing into something new.

A Note About Our Salve 🌿

Southern Roots Salve is handcrafted in small batches using natural ingredients. Because we keep things simple and natural, each batch may look or feel slightly different. You may notice slight variations in color, texture, consistency, or natural settling — and that’s completely normal.

Temperature changes can also cause the salve to soften or firm up. These natural variations do not mean anything is wrong with your salve; they’re simply part of choosing a handcrafted product made without unnecessary stabilizers or fillers.

Give it a little stir if needed, keep it stored in a cool, dry place, and enjoy it the way nature intended. 🌿
